Characteristics of probes with an orifice are measured in a space chamber which simulates an ionospheric plasma of low plasma density. It is found that an orifice probe backed by a plane collector shows distorted characteristics due to field penetration, when the Debye length becomes smaller and comparable to the radius of the orifice. A modification is introduced to the theory by Tonks et al. to obtain the collector current-voltage characteristics and their derivatives, and to evaluate the deviation from the Druyvesteyn formula. Further, an attempt is made to reduce the field penetration by using two coaxial cylindrical collectors enabling the measurement of an isotropic velocity distribution function.
