Ferromagnetic-Dominant Alternating Heisenberg Chains with Ferromagnetic and Anfiferromagnetic Interactions Formed in (CH_3)_2CHNH_3CuCl_3

On rneasuring the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of (CH3)zCHNH3CuCl3 on tlaetemperature, we find that this compound forums ferromagnetic and antiferrornagnetic alternatinglinear chains with S : 172. The rtaagnetic stzsceptibilities observed in external fields appliedalong three different surfaces of an as-grown single-crystal sample show broad peaks at arottrad24 K and steeply decrease to zero with further decreases in temperattrre toward O K. Two types of'superexchange interactions defined in the HatrniJtonian 'It :: -2J) I Szj-87)?) -2J) I S)j=S)j 3are detertnined to be J3/k : -23.5 K at'ud ,73/k = -f54.l K, which indicates that a pair offerrornagnetically coupled spins behaves as a spin of S : l and thus this compound is regardedas antiferrornagnetic linear chains with S : l. The present systern can therefore be discussed interms of the Haldane conjecttrre for integer spins. The energy gap is estirnated to be 17.1 N 18.1K.
