Quadrupolr Interaction in NdB_6 Studied by Magnetostriction

Thermal expansion and longitttdinal unagnetostriction along the (001) direction ,47/Z(g0j) ofNdB5 have been measured in the rnagnetic field H along the z axis ((001) direction) LIP to8 T. Below the N!el ternperattrre Tg, accompanying the spin-flop transition or domain rotationat O.5T, the z axis shrinks greatly. The therrna[ expansion in H : 2,IT where the orderedmoment is perpendicular to H, shows that the shrinkage of the z axis becomes smaller withincreasing temperature and disappears at Tg. The restzlts were analyzed ttsing a rnolectrlarfield approximation and it was shown that it is necessary to introduce the ferro-quadrtrpolarinteraction K3 with a 13 synumetry in NdB?. The difference in the thermal expansion in theparamagnetic region between CeB5 and NdB(j is disctrssed froun the standpoint that there existslarge antiferro-quadrupolar short-range ordering in CeB5,
