Evolution of the Rayleigh-Benard Convection in a Rectangular Box

We report the results on the MAC numerical simulations of the Rayleigh-Benard convectionfor a Boussinesq fluid with the Prandtl number Pr : 6 confined in a rectangular box with theaspect ratios T. O 3.0 and T. : 1.5. With increase of the Rayleigh number, the initial statewith two parallel steady rolls undergoes a successive series of transitions in such a way that (i) asfor the time behavior: steady --+ periodic oscillations --+ quasi-periodic with two fundamentalfrequencies -+ chaotic; and that (11) as for the horizontal spatial symmetry in terms of the pointgroup notation: C2. --+ C?? -+ C3.. In particular, the periodic oscillations are shown to arisefrom the B02 blob instability. The results are compared with those of the experiment on water.
