A simple method, which we call z-site approximation, is )croposed for calculatingthe thermodynamic functions of the one-dimensional plane rotator model in an exter-nal field. On the basis of this method, these functions are expressed in the form of aseries expansion in terms of the modified Bessel function of integer order. We havederived the free energy and tlae pair correlation function up tc>rl = 7 and n = 2 approx-imations, respectively.
