The diffusion coefficient of a tracer particle hopping diffusively in a two-dimensional hard-core lattice gas is obtained by Monte Carlo simulation as a model of diffusion of molecules in biomembranes. For a specific size of the tracer particle, a correla-tion effect is pronounced and the diffusion coefficient is depressed. This may explainexperimentally observed high diffusion coefficients of lipids and weak dependence ofthe diffusion coefficient upon the radii of proteins in artificial membrane. In addition,the drag on a disk moving in a two-dimensional viscous fluid is calculated under thecondition that momentum decays out of the fluid. This hydrodynamic model showsboth strong and weak dependence of the diffusion coefficient upon the size of diffu-sant according to the strength of coupling between the lipids in the membrane and thewater molecules surrounding the membrane.
