The statistical mechanics of the assembly of the dislocation lines in a three dimen-sional crystal is developed. Using the transfer matrix method, the statisticalmechanics of the dislocations is transformed into the ground state problem of the twodimensional Fermion-Boson system. This approach gives a convincing proof for thefree energy expression:/( p) = -7". p In Cp -FF. p -Y-F. p',where p is the dislocation density, F. and F. are positive constants, and C is a constantof the order a' (a being the lattice spacing). The constant F. is positive at low tempera-lures but is negative at high temperatures.
