Ultrasonic velocities in (NH.).SnBr, were measured as functions of temperature(157 - 300 K) to investigate the nature of the structural phase transition at T.. = 157 K.It was found that among the elastic constants in the cubic phase (7'>I..)C.=(C.. - C..)/2 and C.=C.. become soft near T.. and the anomalous parts of themfollow the relations AC.ccln(I -1..)andAC.oc(7' -T..) " above T... The softeningof these elastic constants was interpreted in terms of the electrostrictive type couplingbetween acoustic mode and the soft rotary mode of SnBr: at the F point in the cubicBrillouin zone. Two dimensional correlations in the rotational motions of SnBr'octahedra are suggested, which was proposed in SrTi0..
