Proton N.M.R.and Coupled Rotational Tunneling of Methyl Groups in β and γ Phases of Tetramethylsilane

The proton spin-lattice relaxation time ( T.) of the p and 7 phases of tetramethylsilanewas measured between 20.5 and 161.2 K with particular attention to the dependence ofT. on the Larmor frequency and on the kind of pulse sequence. The behavior of non-exponential magnetization recovery was explained in terms of the symmetry restrictedspin diffusion theory. The tunneling rotational effects appeared in the spin-latticerelaxation and were observed by the field cycling technique which led to the twotunneling frequencies, 15.8 80.9 MHz and 24.0 -l- 1.4 MHz, in the 7 phase in the lowtemperature limit. Both frequencies decrease with temperature. The 73 phase showedmore complicated tunneling spectra. The behavior, compared with that of hexamethyl-benzene, suggests that there is coupling between methyl groups in a Si(CH.). moleculealthough weaker than in hexamethylbenzene.
