• Various elimination reactions which are believed to proceed with E<SUB>2</SUB>-type mechanisms have been examined on 9-[2-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-1-naphthyl]fluorene and 9-[2-(1-hydroxy-2-trimethylsilylethyl)-1-naphthyl]fluorene rotamers. Generally, the reaction of the <I>sp</I> rotamers was faster than that of the <I>ap</I> by a factor of 2–9. The results are attributed to the steric effects that are operative in the <I>ap</I> form.
