Time- and space-resolved ion temperature Tn77 in a theta pinch are obtainedfrom spectroscopic measurement of the He II 468.6 nm line in the axial direc-lion. At the maximum pinch, T.7 7 is 500 eV, n.=4 x 10" cm ' and T.=25 eV.At times after the implosion phase, />0.5 ps, 7'N// keeps almost constant in theradial direction until the gradient of the magnetic field profile, measured by aprobe coil, becemes steepest. Radial gradient of the ion temperature is observedoutside the above region. Fast thermalization of the ions is observed, compared tobinary collision times. We also find fast relaxation between T.77 and f. whichis obtained from the side-on measurement. This adduces another evidence toconfirm that the fast thermalization of the tons is mainly due to some collisionlessmechanisms.
