A coaxial optical system for laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy which uses only one observation port has been developed. This system can be used to investigate the behavior of metal impurities in the region where the plasma interacts with the wall in a magnetic confinement device which has no suitable pair of observation ports. The spatial resolution along the axis and the absolute sensitivity of the coaxial optical system were investigated using iron vapor generated in a Knudsen cell. The lower limit of the detectable iron density in this experiment is estimated to be $4\times 10^{13}$ m-3. The coaxial optical system has also been demonstrated to be useful for reducing the fluorescence produced by the window material, a serious disadvantage in conventional coaxial optics.
