The elastic constants of the hard sphere crystal xaear the melting point areinvestigated. The assumption ita Born's theory th'at tlte elastic constant of shearshould vauaish at the naelting point is examinaed. In pl:ace of his theory which cannot be arr>tied to the hard srhere crvstal straishtforvvardlv, tlte effective roten-tial method developed in a previous paper by one of the present authors (K.H.)is employed. The important effect of atomic orderirtg in long ratage in the crystalis faked into accoutat. As an effect of fluctuation ita tlris order parameter, certainelastic constants in particular the bulk modulus diverge to rrtinus infinity a.t athreshold of the specific volume. [11 spite of difficulty tlaat the Fourier componentsof the second derivative of interaction potezatial is inclefinite, the velocities of thelattice wave in the limit of long wave length can be obtained.
