A unified description is given for magnetism c?f narrow band electron :systemson the basis of a functional integral formalism xvithin the static approxitnation.A method is developed to calculate the free enerz;y functional from a given' bandstructure and its closed form expression is given for arbitrary amplitudes of thespin and charge density fluctuations, correpond?jng to arbitrary strength of theelectron-electron interaction. This expression is? shown to lead to essentiallycorrect results in both the weak and strong couj>Ring limits. The metal-intsulator(Mott) transition and related magnetic propertiess for the case of half-filled bandand the magnetism of metals in the case of non-integral occupation number peratom are discussed with a numerical example for a tight-binding band in a simplecubic lattice.
