Spin polarization of paramagnetic metals due to magnetic impurity atoms is studied on the basis of a virtual state picture as described by Anderson and by Wolff and Clogston. Parcicularly the effect of exchange interaction in the host metal is treated and is shown to be important in explaining the magnitude and extension of the spin density around an impurity atom in palladium. The magnitudes of the giant moments in dilute Fe-Pd, Co-Pd alloys, etc., are calculated on a few simple models with reasonable results. The signs of the spin polarizations due to various impurity atoms are qualitatively explained on the same models. Finally from a comparison between the results of the present and the previous works, the physical conclusions of the previous work on ferro- and antiferromagnetic prop-erties of transition metals and alloys are supported.
