Piezo-Optical Study of Graphite in 3 to 6 eV Range

Piezoreflectivity of graphite has been measured betweett 3 and 6 eV. Thcpiezospectrum is interpreted as arising from three transitions relevant to th<optical spectrum, M) transition at 3.8 eV, degenerate M., M. transitions a4.5 eV, and M. transition at 5.2 eV. These energies yield y. -7. =0.35 eV and 7.2.26 eV as the band parameters along the M-L line in the Brillouin zone. Thcstrain coefficients of the parameters are obtained as, Ay(,/y.:53 per ttnit strain itthe basal plane and Ay./y,:A"7./y.:37 per unit strain along the c-axis.
