Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering Study of Aqueous Solutions of FeCl_3, NiCl_2 and MgCl_2

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiment was performed on Feel., NiCl.and MgCl. aqueous solutions. The whole shape of energy spectra of incoherentlyscattered neutrons was analyzed. The hydration number of Fe" ion was esti-mated to be 2.6, beins inder>endent of solute concentration. Based on a jtunpdiffusion model, the diffusion constant and the rest time for the water moleculesbound to Ni" ion in the NiCI. solution were eslximated as 0.2 x 10-' cm" sec 'and 3.0xl0 "sec at 25'C, and?0.6xl0 'cm'sec-' and 2.0xI0 "sec at55'C, respectively. Those to Mg" ton in the MgCI. solution were estimated as0.8xl0-'cm"sce-' and 3.0xl0 "sec at 25'C, respectively. The presentresults justify the structure model proposed by Brady et at. for the Feel. solutionand the simplified "hard sphere model" originally proposed by Quirke et at. for theNiCl. solution. The diffusion process of Mg" ion in the MgCl. solution is dis-cussed.
