Pressure effects on the emission spectra excited by the A ttbsorption have beenobserved at various temperatures between 168 and 293 K in Kl, KBr, and KCI dopedwtth Tl", In", or Ga". When both of the A.. and A. bands appear, the A.. band growsat the expense of the A. band as the pressure increases. Particularly, in KBr: Tl" andKBr: In", the A. band disappears almost completely under 7.5 k bar. When only theA.. band appears as in KCI: Tl" and KCI: In', no drastic change has been observed upto 7.5 k bar. The pressure effects have been discussed on the basis of the quadratic Jahn-Teller effect by correlating the relaxed excited states for the A.. and A. bands to thetetragonal and trigonal minima on the F .- (A) and ff adialcatic potential energysurfaces respectively.
