Quadratic Jahn-Teller Effect in the Line Shapes of the A-Emission and A-Absorption Bands in KBr:Tl^+-Type Phosphors

The adiabatic potential energy surfaces (APE,S's) of Tl"-type impurities in alkalihalides, 'T.. (F ; ) and 'A..( F 7 ) have been calculated taking account of the spin-orbitinteraction and both the linear and quadratic Jahn-Teller effect with the at.. and c.vibrational modes. It has been found that the 'T.. APES's have one kind of minima orthe two kinds of minima, depending on whether we assume the linear or both the linearand quadratic Jahn-Teller interactions. A trap level 'A.. lies just below both theminima. The line shapes of the .4-emission and fl-absorption bands in KBr: Tl" arecalculated by using the Franck-Condon and Condon approximations. It has beenfound that the theoretical line shape of the .4-emission band has the asymmetricdoublet structure and reproduces ?the experimental emission bands A7 and Ag. Thisshows that the large energy differnce between the Ag and A? bands is caused by thequadratic Jahn-Teller terms involving Q. (a.,).
