A Bent and Asymmetrically Hindered Chiral Alkyl Chain in Smectic-A Phase of an Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal as Observed by ^2H-NMR

The structure and dynamics of the alkyl chains are investigated by 'H-NMR for specificallydettterated sanaples of an antiferroelectric chiral snuectic liqvxid crystal IIS/IHPOBC. The'H-NIN4Rspectrum for the chiral alkyl chain exhibits very sunall qvradrujcolar splittings, and the tmethylenesclose to the chiral center give double splittings ascribable to two difl'erent quadrupolar splittingsfor each rnethylene unit. The untnsual nattrre of the chira[ chain is revealed; the chain is bentf'rona the naolecular long axis, and is asytaarnetrically hindered.
