Investigation of Stationary Population Inversion between Low Excited States of HE^+ in a Rcombining Plasma

Leading members of the Lym.an series of He II emitted l'rom a high-densityhelium plasma have been measured by the use of the Rar<c-gas PhotoelectronCounter which is based on the energy analysis of photoelectrons liberated byXUV radiation. Stationary population inversion bcctween low lying levels of He'is confirmed in a recombining plasma which is interacting with neutral helium.The ratio n./g3.'. n3/g.: n./g,z". n,/g. is found to be 1 : 0.6: 1.i : 1.2. A method ofdetermining the electron temperature, the electron density and the ion densityfrom the recombination continua is described. Collisional and recom.binationprocesses can explain reasonably the observed level populations.
