Longitudinal quarter-wavelength resonances for surface waves were found in thepartial length of a low-frequency (28 MHz) surfacce-wave-produced plasma columnwith an axial inhomogeneity o [ the plasma density. Input RF power for the resonanceincreases with the finite length of the plasma column. The r'esonances were determined to be of quarter-wavelength by axial measurement oj' surface wave electricfields. By means of our mode-cxoupling theory, such resonances were well identified asthe longitudinally lowest and a.zimuthally symmetric surface mode modified by an ax-ial inhomogeneity of the plasma that was simultaneously produced by the interactionof surface waves with plasmas.
