NMR Study of the Metal-Insulator-Magnetic Transitions in BaVS_3

Microscopic magnetic properties of BaVS, have been investigated by means ofNMR of "V in the high-temperature metallic phase, in the low-temperature insu-Hating phase which exhibits magnetic order and in the intermediate temperatureinsulating phase. The hyperfine coupling constant was obtained to be -ll3f3(k0e/p.) in the high temperature phase. The temperaturc dependences of the lineshift, the line width and the spin-echo decay time in the intermediate phase suggestthat the mechanism of the metal-to-insulator transition around 70 K involves agradual pairing of the magnetic vanadium atoms in linear chains to form a non-magnetic state with decreasing temperature. The coexistence of both magnetucand nonmagnetic sites of vanadium atoms and the spin structure in the lowtemperature phase are discussed.
