To date, there have been mainly two approaches for the study of the transition from free to ambipolar diffusion of charged particles. First, by means of transport equations with a constant ratio approximation (CRA) assuming that the spatial distributions of electrons and ions have the same form, an effective diffusion coefficient characterizing diffusive flow of charged particles has been calculated. Second, without assuming CRA, the distribution of electrons in particular has been solved and the effective diffusion coefficient has been defined from an effective diffusion length which is proportional to the distance from the central point to the absorbing boundary. Here, it is shown that the effective diffusion coefficient with CRA is generally more significant than that without CRA.
