An early problem of the transition from free to ambipolar diffusion of electronshas been reexamined. Starting from the classical flow equations for electrons andpositive tons and the continuity equations for charged particles, we have obtaineda general characteristic equation of effective diffusion coefficient for electrons,where the results due to Allis have been corrected. The transition characteristicscalculated from the above general equation have been extremely concrete andpractical. Finally this approach has been applied to the cylindrical positive columnof glow discharge and an example of the characteristics has been presented as afunction of the plasma density for various values of the electron temperature.
