Synchronized Phase Slips in a Mesoscopic Charge-Density-Wave System

A series of phase-slip events in a clean mesoscopic charge-density-wave (CDW) system is studied by numerical simulations based on a Monte Carlo technique. Phase slips are classified into the winding phase slip (PS_+) after which a wavefront is added to the CDW, and the unwinding phase slip (PS_-) after which a wavefront is removed. Particular attention is focused on the time correlation of PS_+ and PS_- events. It is shown that at relatively low bias voltages, a PS_± event very likely occurs just after the appearance of a PS__± event to reduce CDW strain. It is also shown that this synchronization of phase-slip events becomes pronounced with decreasing sample length.
