Absolute Measurement of X-Ray Scattering Factors of Copper

The X-ray atomic scattering factor of copper was obtained by absolute measurements of intensities diffracted from powder samples. The data obtained with CuK_α and MoK_α radiations showed a good argeement with each other. The results did not show such a large "reduction" in the values of the scattering factor as reported by Batterman et al. The results were compared with the theoretical valves calculated by Freeman and Watson for a free atom and those calculated by Wakoh (1966) for an atom in the crystalline state taking the band structure into account. The discrepancies between the experimental values and the theoretical values of either source were found to be within the range of experimental errors; in other words, no conclusive evidence of the solid-state effect was round
