Electron State in AlN Studied by Compton Scattering Measurement

The electron state in a refractory material, AIN, has been studied by means of the Compton profile analysis. The discrepancy between the theoretical profile calculated from wave functions for isolated atoms and the measured profile for the corresponding crystal is very large compared with the cases of ionic crystals. It has been concluded that the covalency in the solid or crystalline state of AIN should be taken into account in order to get a better agreement. As required, the linear momentum functions have been calculated and listed for isolated atoms, Al-, Al^+, Al^<+2>, Al^<+3>,N- and N^+, using the wave functions by Clementi.
