Various amounts of _D-and _L-alanine were fed to rice cells. The growth of cells cultured in the _D-alanine-containing medium was inhibited and the degree of inhibition tended to be affected by the amount of _D-alanine retained in the cells. In the _L-alanine-containing medium, growth inhibition of the cells did not occur and the _L-isomer may represent a suitable nitrogen source for cell growth. By repeated sub-culture in the _D-alanine-containing medium, the inhibition of cell growth by the _D-isomer tended to become reduced.
