Simulation of Granular Friction and Its Effective Theory

This paper discusses the application of the distinct element method (DEM) for granular friction and its effective (or simplified) macroscopic model. We focus on the stick-slip motion in a sheared granular friction process which corresponds to an experiment by Nasuno et al. (Phys. Rev. E58(1998), 2161). We reproduce many of their experimental results from the simulations of the DEM model and the effective model.
