A simple mathematical model exhibiting a laser-like behaviour is considered, in order to obtain an insight into essential physical process involved in the phase transition between stationary states and, in particular, to discuss the states of the excess entropy production among several possible Liapounoff functions. In this paper preliminary consideration is given, in which the stability properties of stationary states are discussed by examining the characteristic exponentials of the linearized equation for the regression of small fluctuations, and the Liapounoff function is constructed which gives the transition point without ambiguity. The time derivative of this the eigenfunctions of the matrix associated with the linearized equation are not orthogonal with one another. From this it is concluded that the excess entropy production can give a definite criterion for the instability only when the eigenfunctions of the associated matrix are orthogonal. As a by-product, it is shown that by using the above-mentioned function an analogue of Ginzburg-Landau free energy which describes the transition can be derived very easily.
