After giving a general phase-theoretical argument about the localization of eigenmodes in one-dimensional systems, the results of a series of numerical experiments, which have been made on vibrational eigenmodes of isotopically disordered harmonic chains for the purpose of elucidating the mechanism of localization, are reported. Most of the conclusions which have hitherto been obtained theoretically, and also the conjectures which have been made upon the basis of theoretical intuition, are corroborated by these ixperiments. Some discussions are given as to the relation between the localization of eigenmodes and the transmission property of disordered one-dimensional systems.
