Monte Carlo Studies of Lattice Models : LJD Lattice, Fine-Grained Lattices and Continuum

In order to investigate how Lennard-Jones and Devonshire's (LJD) lattice model approaches a corresponding continuum system, LJD lattice model and fine-grained lattice models, which are constructed by successive binary division of the former lattice constant into two (2d), four (4d) abd eight (8d) parts, are simulated with the Monte Carlo method. As a pair potential the soft-core potential φ(r)=ε(σ/r)^<12> is used. Thermodynamic properties of respective models are presented. For LJD lattice model, the mean energy approximation as well as the Bragg-Williams approximation are tested. The metastable fluid state extends to higher densities only for the 4d and 8d models. The equation of fluid state of the continuum system can accurately be described by both the 4d and 8d models, but that of solid state can be done only by the 8d model. This fact suggests a characteristic difference between the oreder-disorder transition and the melting transition.
