The properties of the zero field current step in relatively long Josephson junction in an applied magnetic field are studied in the framework of fluxon model. A steady state solution of the barrier (perturbed sine-Gordon) equation is constructed by combining the free fluxon solution and correction terms describing the effects of perturbations and the applied field. This is used to calculate the dependences of the step height on the junction-quality factor and the applied field, yielding the results consistent with those of experimental observations and the other theories based on the cavity mode excitations. A close relation between the perturbed fluxon state and the multi-mode cavity wave state discussed by Enpuku et al. is pointed out.
