Detailed analysis of a piece-wise linear map of a circle onto itself is presented. The stability of periodic points and the resonance overlap are studied. The existence of chaotic motions near the low period resonance steps is shown by analysis. The destruction of quasi-periodic motions is studied by the numerical calculations of an analytic map and an interpretation is given by comparing with the case of the piece-wise linear map.
