A method of approximately calculating form factors of stripping and pick-up reactions in the DWBA is presented. The method is useful if the nuclear wave functions are known accurately in the internal region. Then the form factor which is accurate also in the surface region can be obtained, its correct asymptotic form being automatically guaranteed by the formalism. Quantitative features of the approximation are studied in detail for the case of the one-body problem in which exact wave functions in the Woods-Saxon potential are compared with the ones calculated by the method using appropriately chosen harmonic oscillator wave functions. Application of the method to various cases of practical interest, including the two-particle transfer reaction, is discussed.
