Mass Formula in Broken Symmetry

Validity of a linear mass formula in a broken symmetry scheme is investigated using a Lee-type model. Questions raised by Oakes and Yang are discussed. It is concluded that a linear mass formula can be valid under certain conditions, while there are some cases where no mass formula is expected. It is also discussed that a perturbative mass formula may apply better to the poles of K-matrices (called K-masses) than to the actual masses. The consistency of an assumed linear K-mass formula is examined in the case of the decuplet P_<3/2> resonances in SU_3.
