On the Electromagnetic and Gravitational Interactions and Schwinger Terms

It is shown that a massless particle with spin s≧2 cannot have the usual gravitational interaction, following the procedure of Case and Gasiorowicz who showed that a massless vector particle has not the minimal electromagnetic interaction. The Schwinger terms are investigated for these cases, especially for a massless vector particle in an electromagnetic field. Our results suggest that the vanishing of the equal-time commutator among sources leads to a vanishing of the sources themselves as operators, i. e. the absence of interactions. The properties of the commutator among the non-conserved gravitational sources are investigated in the case where the minimal gravitational interactions are assumed to exist. In order that the energy-momentum tensor operator does not vanish, it is redefined as the limit of a non-local two point operator. In connection with gauge invariance, a reasonable energy-momentum tensor is proposed for a scalar particle in general relativity.
