We investigate the question whether the gravitational interactions can be introduced consistently within the framework of the Lagrangian formalism in Minkowski space. When the starting source term is the energy-momentum tensor derived from the free Lagrangian, the gravitational self-interaction and the interactions coupled with the matter fields can be obtained up to a higher order approximation. On the other hand, when the primary gravitational interactions contain the general anomalous form factors proposed by Hiida and Yamaguchi, one cannot find a consistent interaction Lagrangian even to the second order approximation unless the formalism of the free gravitational field is modified. These features are also viewed from the standpoint of covariance in Einstein's general relativity.
