Vector Spaces with Indefinite Metric and Pole-Type Ghosts

A quantum field theory of general pole-type ghosts is formulated by starting from their definitions in state vector spaces with indefinite metric, on the basis of a few field theoretical postulates. The present general formalism holds for an arbitrary multipole ghost including Froissart's dipole and Nagy's tripole ghosts. It is shown that both the Lagrangian and canonical formalisms can be constructed and they are equivalent to each other.
