The Higgs Mechanism in a Covariant-Gauge Formalism : Dipole-Ghost Character of the Goldstone Field

In a covariant-gauge formalism for gauge fields the Higgs mechanism is investigated under a spontaneous breakdown of gauge invariance. It is shown that the Goldstone bosons are in general described by a dipole-ghost field and can be consistently eliminated from the physical state-vector space by supplementary conditions. By an asymptotic condition for the relevant fields, field equations and commutators of asymptotic fields are determined. A renormalization problem and an aspect concerning gauge transformations are also discussed.
