According to the conventional rules of calculation, the significance of the Goto-ImamuraSchwinger term in quantum electrodynamics is investigated in connection with gauge and renormalization. The results are as follows: 1) If the G-I-S term is present, the unrenormalized photon self-energy part defined in the Feynman gauge can be neither covariant nor gauge invariant. 2) The G-I-S term plays the role of changing the gauge of the photon propagation function pathologically. 3) Consequently, unless it is eliminated by some manipulation, covariant gauge formulation is generally impossible in the renormalization process.
