Compounds with Juvenile Hormone Activity. I. Inhibitory Effects of the Synthetic Juvenile Hormone and Its Analogues on the Metamorphosis of Several Insects

Chilo supplessalis WALKER and Nephotettix cincticeps UHLER were found to be sensitive to the synthetic juvenile hormone. In Chilo larvae, larval-pupal metamorphosis was totally or partially disturbed on both cuticle and imaginal discs as in the case of Galleria. They were most sensitive to the hormone at the stage of 3rd to 4th day of the last-instar. Most of the juvenile hormone analogues tested had both lethal as well as morphogenetic effect on Nephotettix nymphae. The juvenile hormone activity of methyl farnesoate and its analogues was studied on 5 species of insects, including the 2 species mentioned above. Special attention was paid to the alkyl substituents at the C-11 position and the epoxydation of the double bond between the C-10 and C-11 position. The alkyl substituents appeared to cause a general increase in the activity. By epoxydation, the juvenile hormone activity generally increased but rather decreased in Chilo larvae.
