The Traditional Crafts industry needs for some structural reform. The industry is declining like others under long lasting depression after the collapse of babble economy in Japan. Although the Traditional Crafts seemed to be destroyed during the Sino-Japanese War and the World WarII, various producing centers tried to revive them after the War. The traditional Crafts industry had been restored together with resurgence of national economy in the 1960's, the period of high economic growth. The period, however, had already generated a basic problem of the Traditional Crafts industry, while recession caused by oil crisis in 1974 influenced on that. The essential issue is not the sales results of products but inability of the industry to cope with development of producing style in other industries, and with changes in consuming style of life in Japan. The history of the Traditional Crafts has ever told us that it is necessity for the industry to adjust to each social situation in order to inherit the tradition. Moreover, several problems from which the producing centers suffer now are only one aspect of issues resulted from Japanese living culture at large. Many producing centers are seriously struggling with this sort of matters, and making efforts to succeed the Traditional Crafts products for future. Fortunately, young generation on whose shoulder rest the prospects seems to begin some new activities. This report will report on existing states and problems of the Traditional Crafts industry, introducing a challenge of the Commodity Development Society of a producing center guild for Ohbori-soma-pottery. The report will make a case study on an attempt of Namie-cho, Futaba District of Fukushima Prefecture, where is a producing center of Ohbori-soma-pottery, the traditional potteries since the early Edo period. Similar to other many industries, the manufacturers of Ohbori-soma- pottery were not able to catch up drastic change in consumers' needs in recent years in terms of its product development. They had rested on their established commodity type at the prosperous days of exporting boom after the War. Under this situation, however, the Commodity Development Society has been founded in April 1993. "Tou-Ki-Mi" is a nickname of the Society and a brand name of its commodities too. The Society holds some concepts for product development as follows. * Creation of commodities employing superb traditional craft and features of Ohbori-soma-pottery * Creation of commodities introducing states of new sense and adapting to the latest demands * Creation of commodities considering the users' minds with respect to the practicality and the function An activity like Tou-Ki-Mi is the first step of a change in the Traditional Crafts products facing real society and being future-oriented. The activity must be further developed. The Crafts products will be transformed here- after, following the transitions of Japanese life style. In future, disappearance and modification of the Traditional Crafts products will confirm a view that the phenomena are based on an awareness of the Japanese people about living culture rather than on the results from lack of endeavor in producing centers.
