At present, the Commodity Museum is engaged in activities with primary stress on traditional crafts. This article, while describing the way the museum should approach traditional crafts, reports on its activities in practice, taking up the 1996 and 1997 exhibitions as examples. The Commodity Museum focusses on the following aspects in displaying traditional crafts as commodities: (1) Use as necessaries; The meaning of crafts as products used in daily life is stressed and not as works of art for appreciation. Traditional crafts should be viewed as having been manufactured and distributed in response to needs of daily life and should be valued as materials which show what life was actually like. (2) Historic quality of skills and as necessities of life The focus is on the magnitude of the impact on traditional crafts of the historical setting at the time of manufacture and on the historical background of their being handed down to the present. (3) Reflecting the place of production Recently, there has been much discussion about a decentralization of power. It should promote the individual and rectify the concentration of power at the center not only in terms of governmental agencies but also culture. Given this approach, highlighting traditional crafts that represent the specific quality of the producing area makes sense. (4) Paying attention to raw materials and manufacturing process Shown are not only finished traditional crafts displayed in shops as commodities, but also the process from the supply of raw materials to their sale as traditional crafts.
