Recently, universities and colleges have been increasingly expected to open up their campuses for lifelong studies. This development suggests that the historical role of universities is on the threshold of a new phase. Looking back on the historical functions of universities in this country, they were for training men who would be useful to the state in the prewar period, while in the postwar era the focus has been on selecting and developing manpower to meet industrial demand. In either period, attention was paid to competitiveness within a uniform-quality and monolithic-value framework. Somehow, a qualitative retreat was noted at the highest seats of learning and arts. The need to provide those seeking for opportunities to learn with greater access to the universities and colleges has arisen against such backdrop. At present, lectures for citizens as well as correspondence courses, auditors courses, and night-time postgraduate courses are now available as concrete media of lifelong education. The two are poles apart in that the former highlights general education, whereas the latter stresses professional knowledge. A university-affiliated museum can be thought to lie between the two as a bridge, whose role is to help enhance the enthusiasm to learn to the power to absorb professional knowledge. The museum is expected to perform its responsibilities of enhancing the enthusiasm to learn among the public to the point where it turns into the capability to study at an advanced level at the university, which keeps its sophisticated research regime as a research organization. With attention to these trends and ideas, the Commodity Museum is contemplating offering a series of coordinated courses based on the traditional craft products. They represent an effort to meet contemporary challenges, such as shifting quantitative riches to higher quality and mental affluence and developing commodities in response to a wide range of needs.
