The Commodity Museum of the Meiji University made a choice of Ohborisohma-yaki (pottery) and Miharu-koma Miharu-hariko (folk toys) which are traditional crafts in Eastern part of Fukushima Prefecture as themes for its special exhibition in 1997. It also decided Hida-Syunkei (lacquerware) and Shibukusa-yaki (ceramics) of Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture as the themes for 1998. The Museum investigated the reality of each area of production for the preparation. This report will touch on the results of these two surveys. Ohborisohma-yaki (Namie-cho, Fukushima Prefecture) It is said that the craft began at the beginning of the 17th century. Namie-cho is the greatest producer of pottery in the Northeastern section of Japan. The features of the products are a color tone of tanned green and the patterns of galloping horses. Miharu-koma (Kohriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture) It is a toy of wooden horse handed down from before the Edo period. This is one of the most famous folk toy in Japan based on its popularity mainly because the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications made a design of it for a New Year stamp in 1954. We also examined Miharu-hariko (Japan paper doll) at the same time as the producing place is duplicate. Hida-Syunkei (Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture) It was allegedly begun in the first half of the 17th century, and is largely developed after the latter half of the 19th century. Shunkei-lacquerware is a technique to lacquer repeatedly on plain wooden basis without any coloring. The grain can be subtly seen through deep color tone of lacquer, which is peculiar to Shunkei-lacquerware. It also has unique technique of additive decoration working plain wood. Shibukusa-yaki (Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture) A potter, Ryuzo Toda by name, was invited from Owari (present Aichi Prefecture), and he inaugurated an enterprise of ceramics in 1841. Later, a painter was invited from Kaga (present Ishikawa Prefecture). A technique of Arita in Kyushu was also introduced. Thus, the pottery has the features introduced from three most famous producing centers of pottery in Japan.
