• The Commodity Museum of Meiji University conducted a fact-finding investigation of the ceramic industry, which is distributed from Seto City in Aichi Prefecture to the Tono district of Gifu Prefecture comprising Kasahara Town, Tajimi City and Toki City. The survey was carried out in accordance with the policy of taking up the ceramic industry in the region concerned as a priority theme for 1996. The probe was to be based on the educational and dissemination activity plan to make a comprehensive presentation of the history and status of the traditional industry and the geographical environment of the producer areas. A great variety of data were collected, centering on "Akazu pottery" in Seto City and "Mino pottery" in the Tono district, which are currently Japanese traditional crafts designated by the Minister of International Trade and Industry. This report pieced together a picture of the status of the producer areas by setting the following themes on the basis of interviews carried out during the investigation: - Ceramic history in the Seto and Mino areas - Status as a traditional industry 1. An overview of the producer areas 2. Supply of raw materials (porcelain clay and glaze) 3. Product development ("Mino Design Project" and others) 4. Sales (marketing under brand names - producer area brand and individual brand -, impact of recent recession, routes of distribution) 5. The role of a producer area cooperative (PR activity, youth department's activity) 6. Employees of ceramic ware producers 7. Folkways of ceramic makers (rites performed before the kiln, Akibasan faith, yama-no-kami, meals)
