Tubular secretion and reabsorption of aromatic amino acids is mediated by organic anion transporters (OAT) and amino acid transporters in the basolateral membrane (BLM) and brush border membrane (BBM) of proximal tubule cells. So far, the cDNA of three types of OAT, expressed in the S2 segment of the proximal tubule, and the cDNA of L-type amino acid transporters, involved predominantly in reabsorption by the BBM, have been cloned, and the molecular structures and transport characteristics have been elucidated. The cDNA of ATB^0 was originally cloned quite some time ago. However, ATB^0 has been recently suggested to be a membrane transporter belonging to System B^0 , a Na^+-dependent reabsorption aromatic amino acid exchange system in the BBM. The results of recent molecular pharmacological studies have failed to elucidate the entirety of aromatic amino acid membrane transport in the kidney, but have succeeded in explaining the results of past studies.
