<Original Artucle>Holmium : YAG Laser Treatment for Ureteral Transitional Cell Carcinoma : A Case Report

We report a case of superficial transitional cell carcinoma at the lower end of the ureter for which holmium : YAG laser treatment was implemented via a rigid ureteroscope. The patient was a 87-year-old female. During the follow-up period after transurethral resection of bladder (TUR-Bt), a filling defect at the lower end of the right ureter was found by intravenous pyelogram (IVP). A ureteroscopy revealed multiple pedunculated papillary tumors within a 2 cm range. The pathologic diagnosis was grade-1 transitional cell carcinoma. Holmium : YAG laser treatment was performed via a rigid ureteroscope, and a 6F double J ureteral stent was placed for 3 weeks. No intra- or postoperative complications were experienced, and no recurrence of the tumor has been observed up to the present time (15 months since the operation). The transurethral endoscopic operation using a holmium : YAG laser for ureteral carcinomas is a safe and useful therapy especially for low grade tumors in the high-risk cases.
